I didn't want to make stupid iPhone apps in 2006. I wanted to make PC games (which didn't go well for me). When I graduated computer science in 2003, I helped create a fully functioning 3d rasterizer that worked on flip phones. It would have been perfect for use on the iphones.
I could have retired 10 years ago by making shitty 3d games or apps in that market environment. Now I'll be lucky if any of my free-to-play games (not published yet, of course) will get any market share.
Ego sucks.
