I make about $80k give or take and I don't pay anywhere 33% tax off my paycheque, its closer to 20% of my take home. Keep in mind that CPP and EI are deductions and not taxes, this is likely where the disagreement lies.
That said, when I add my property tax and Ontarios 13% sales tax on most of the shit you buy in the end you are up to about 30-35% of what you get paid taken in tax in some form at some time.
