I was going to recommend a soundbar until I saw that you wanted the rear speakers as well. I use soundbars in my house and love them, but our basement is the main big tv / sound system and we have a full 5.1 system, but the house is pre-wired so didn't need to run anything.
Some soundbars are great and fill most small/medium sized rooms quite well, but you'll never get the full surround feel with them like you would with rear L/R speakers. Depends on your preference... there are tons of great soundbars out there.
