The other kicker that kills me is the voting system itself. Right leaning voters have to make a choice between someone they don't align with morally, or someone they disagree with fundamentally. I may have said it before, but my Utopia is a blind voting system. Something like an SAT, but the questions are subjective. Your answers essentially vote for what the candidates campaigned on. Then a magical wizard descends from the sky and holds them accountable.
