Safe injection sites are a hot button issue where I am... lots of outraged members of the communities where the injection sites are located. We know that crime rates spike in those areas and it does make the neighborhood shitty, but they do try to place them in high risk areas. Although in Calgary, those areas are mixed with affluent neighborhoods as well, so our safe injection site is right in the middle of slum and mansions.
The statistics are quite clear about the lives they save as well though... it is proven that OD's decrease quite dramatically when safe injection sites are an option. It keeps those people safe, but at the same time makes crime worse in the area and to an extent these places do enable some people. So is the risk worth the reward? Not sure, I'm torn here. I'm not so liberal to say they're all perfect, but not conservative enough to say fuck the homeless drug addicts, who cares if they die.
