With Q2WF you can use the latest point release and version of WF. Quake 2 didn't have the Client>Server mismatch nonsense that Quake 3 had. The best way I found to get Q2 up and running is this:
1) Download Quake II Starter from here: http://q2s.tastyspleen.net/
2) Play pak0.pak in the same directory as the Quake II Starter and then execute it. This will install the game and all necessary patches.
3) Download the current version of Q2Pro from here and overwrite the older versions installed by Quake II Starter: https://skuller.net/q2pro/
