You said you watched it twice. Did you not watch the last 3 minutes both times? That’s exactly what did happen, Jon DID join the wildlings in the end.
Nobody was expecting a happy ending, but it felt like that’s why they tried to give us. I would have preferred an ending that killed Jon and others. They took multiple plot lines and closed them off or started new paths without any kind of tragic ending really (except for Dany obv.).
I had a hard time with the last episode, but I was quite high so I may watch again sober to see how I feel.
