also Pnue, yeah the oil+gas industry definitely lobbies for special privilege (and sometimes wins) and also against climate change initiatives, and that can happen even if they secretly believe that climate change will have negative effects, because of public choice.

The 'all of our grandchildren will die horrible deaths!' is just hyperbole so they probably dont actually believe that, you're right. They could definitely believe that climate change will impose significant costs on everyone tho.

Public choice says that even if some policy is a big net negative, it can still make sense for a particular minority to lobby for it. If the policy imposes relatively smaller costs across everyone (climate change), whereas the benefits flow to a concentrated group (i.e. the American oil and gas industry), it can still be in that group's interest.

i.e. literally almost every single law or regulation at the federal level.
