Subject: RE: Religion ? Social Schizophrenia?

I still find myself a pretty committed atheist. I do find myself more tolerant of those who believe though. In particular, I'm open to those people who defend religion on more spiritual grounds - i.e. it's entirely plausible that there exists something greater than the universe itself, and that 'force' may or may not be sentient in some sense. But I don't see any specific reason to believe that myself, mostly for reasons of Occam's Razor.

When it comes to specific religions, I find them harder to apologize for just because they are making so many more specific claims that seem wildly implausible in isolation, and absurd when taken as a whole. In these cases, if you're going to concede any value you have to do it on institutional grounds. So and so religion was important and necessary and people were better off for it's existence - whether or not it's true.

In particular, I find myself subscribing to a certain view of universal inalienable personal rights, but also an atheist. IF I were religious, it would be easier to defend natural rights by reference to some deity. And I also believe that if everyone else agreed that these rights existed, that we'd be better off as a society. Maybe religions (while dishonest and untrue) simply serve or served this purpose and for that we need to be grateful.
