well, to understand why someone would vote purely based on their party affiliation, and then adopt all of those values, you'd have to be one of those people that would be willing to do it, so I don't think you'll ever be able to reconcile that brain drain with them.
I am like you, and I wanted to be in politics when I was younger, and I quickly understood the current political crucible does not allow someone that can have objective opinions on a variety of topics.
