its simple, when an argument is presented (for anything) it has to be dealt with on its merits - not on the qualifications of the individual making the argument.
The fact that you simply assess someones authority on a subject and then decide whether to believe what they are saying or not is depressing, but maybe not surprising.
The fact that you actually defend the behaviour when pointed out to you is what is embarassing and/or pathetic about it though.
