Just look at the result. A Syrian airfield with a few holes in it and some nonfunctional aircraft destroyed. Everyone and everything worth something evacuated ahead of the attack because warning was given to the Russians.
This was a PR exercise, something Trump can point to and say he is not in Putin's pocket.

I very much doubt that Trump has any intent on getting the US involved in Syria in any major boots on the ground way. In fact with Russia pulling out of the airspace sharing agreement, which was put in place to avoid accidental contact between US and Russian warplanes, the US is most likely to reduce air operations over Syria. So Vlad wins again.
