The "interview" was known and approved, the tapping is COMPLETELY illegal. He was going in as an ambassador of sorts to talk to the son in hopes of peace.
That is what I've gathered from the story thus far, and in no way am I saying i'm anything but a laymen in the matter. This is one of those under rug stories with all else that is going on. I will be eyeing this intently as it goes though.
