Sure there is the comedic aspect of it, but comics tend to get a pass on being disrespectful and pushing the boundaries and that enables them to say things about politics that would otherwise land people in trouble. So it is useful from that perspective.
That said, Trump is a gift to comedy writers everywhere, the guy is just so over the top and obviously bullshitting his way through the election and now through the Presidency and all his fans and defenders just can't see it. Hilarious and scary at the same time, a perfect recipe for guys like John Oliver and Stephen Colbert.
