Oh my, the rail de-stressing/stressing horror stories I've heard. Rail snaps sideways and hits 2 guys right at the shin. Feet and ankles hanging on by a thread. blech.... The guy in the gif was not maintaining, he was obviously scrapping What is and why stress, de-stress rail: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rail_stressing TL;DR In hot weather rail expands. The extra rail kicks out sideways called a sun kink. Train goes in the ditch. To prevent this, take a slice out of the rail and pull it together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlD2QAngBhs Gets scary when they have to do a curve. On really hot days, the run a hi-rail pickup truck in front of every train to spot sun kinks. Rail anchors help prevent kinks The really far out one was caused by an earthquake: https://www.google.ca/search?q=rail+sun+kink&num=50&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiFydXNuYXNAhUJ8mMKHU07DF8Q_AUIBygB&biw=1527&bih=841#imgrc=_ |
