it sucks so much that i've implemented stuff like elasticsearch to parse my data
makes it more managable and brings big data to the modern era
as for file sync at a consumer level just go with dropbox or google drive ,
if you dont want to store to cloud cause of your wifes naked pics, then just use a hard drive like as mentioned by some scrub above
