Walking Stick is essential for getaways when it's not night time. It makes you walk wicked fast...and if I recall, it's pretty easy to craft.
I pretty much run around with a Pig Skin Helmet on and a Walking Stick and a Backpack for the majority of the game...and I only break out tools when I need them.
