are you using the ioquake3 from the ioquake3.org website? Or are you using the stock id quake3 executable from id?
I just found a problem with the "public" linux version of ioquake3 and it not loading menus. I have access to a mac VM but that's about it.
I'll check with the ioquake3 guys to see if I can get a nightly, but try with idsoftware's first. And no, you don't need the full wfa install, as a matter of fact all you need is the pak399a.pk3 and the vm pk3 and you can fire up stock q3 levels with wfa.
