HULK LEAVE PRESENT NEAR MINE, SHOULD KEEP MONSTERS AT BAY. (-394,-1105)

really, the best you can do usually is keep places relatively well lit. This does nothing about already spawned monsters or ones outside its radius, but it helps to lock down an area you're working in. You typically only have to keep your guard up for creepers if you're careful, you can hear the others and they're not extremely fatal. A full suit of iron armor helps curb some of the damage and should be a high priority.

Re: diamonds, i've had better luck starting just above bedrock (6ish) and branch mining from there. Just be prepared to quickly toss down some cobble if you hit lava and work in a different direction.

Still, if you're feeling adventurous, caves are usually the best bet for everything because of all the exposed rock, less effort involved.
