you have to keep your troops out of your village when you aren't going to be around. you also need enough crannies to protect your resources while they accumulate during that time.
for troops, find some super low pop towns that are far from yours, send them on a raid and check the time, if it's too far or too short, cancel that raid and find another town to try. easy enough to do once you've figured it out.
