http://www.cs.wpi.edu/~matt/courses/cs563/talks/bsp/document.html and http://www.whisqu.se/per/docs/graphics89.htm will sorta fill you in on bsp trees. the first one mentions shadow volumes, which is now working, and there is also a PHS (potential HEARABLE set) that's not described there, only thing i can do is paste code and explain it.

there are some kick-ass books at the UT library, also at Temple; it costs money (lots of it) to get your hands on the papers unless you have access to a university.

the math theory has been worked on since the 1800's, then 1970's had a jump, then with all the text rpg's it sorta made sense to do something with all those tunnels. SGI came out with tons of proven forumas in the 90's.

Hunt the Wumpus. TI video game in the early 80's was an exercize in visualization for it.
