i hear ya kat. there's a used computer parts place in philly tho, south of center city. can't remember where. plan it some day, you can pick up a gf2mx for about 15-20 bucks, pay with a credit card so you get the 30 day warrantee.
still should work on a voodoo, vertex only might crash tho. (vertex only crashed about 3 cards so far, might be fixed now. works for me.)
