rectangular particles or lines are not that fricken hard considering q3 and q2 are both opengl oriented. i don't know about ss's level of exposure to particle effects as seen in demos, because his method is very akin to beginner approach, with using too many small elements, perhaps he is limited by what the current code allows, but hell he has the fricken source right there, adding in rectangular particles shouldn't be a big issue.
