its a 'time of day' clock controller. you can even make it control rotating brushes; think of cancer2/3 and torrent with the clocks that show the server uptime, but instead will show the server's time with the client's offset.
or display a level countdown counter (biggun in q2) or that llama crusher canister in banter, i think a q2 map had it that Aries did.
there's TONS of ents in q2 that were never ported to q3.
