Play around with the Edit Mesh modifier. It allows you to select and modify individual Vertexes, Edges (invisible edges are dashed lines when selected and visible are solid), Faces (the triangles), and polys (groups of faces defined by visible outer edges and invisible inner edges).

You can divide edges by inserting a vertex, you can weld vertexes together into one (Target Weld is your friend), you can delete and create faces and turn edges to fix crimping polys, etc.

Just make a highly segmented box or something, apply an Edit Mesh modifier, and play around with all the buttons in there to see what they do.

Also, check out creating shapes from Lines (Create-- Shapes-- Spline) and using the Extrude modifier to make them 3d. That could help some making lights and other techy details.

Lofting is cool too (Create-- Geometry-- Compound Objects). Just have a circle ready and a curved line (an Arc in Shapes), create a Loft while the circle is selected, press Get Path, and select the curved line. Instant 90 degree pipe.
