I know hollow is a great and terrible evil, but is there anything particularly heinous with subtract and merge?

Also, how does light affect destructable walls... I guess players and other entities don't cast real shadows... so destructable walls are the same way? light just passes through them..?

As far as visible affects codable into a map... I'm curious about a breakdown.
I mean, I realize the vast majority of what you see is just textures on brushes... The tricks with skies are due to shaders... there are also statues and such I've seen that are passable... so I'm assuming these aren't just carefully carved brushes... but that you can just put in models somehow? I'm sort of curious how the "special effects" of maps are created. How are shaders created, and what are their limitations? "light effects" like flare, etc... each of these light effects must be hardcoded into ... the engine or something??
