the one I was just talking about below on www.wfa.us has a detailed installation section (what files, links to them, where they go, what options to configure). Then it works through creating a spawn room, and expanding that to a larger map.
I just learned to map off it this morning; I tried at least a couple other times before, but had the same problems you did, with getting everything the right version, working and in the right directories... also in following the "simple tutorials".
Anyway, go tryout that one, I liked it, lots of screenshots.
