Try V then (vertex edit). Why didn't E (edge edit) work? E is your friend. You can also clip stuff off a brush by holding ctrl and left right-clicking your clipping points where you want the section of the brush chopped off. Then hit enter to chop, shift+enter to spilt, or ctrl+enter to flip the clipping plane.
